Two 6-O-tritylcelluloses and one 6-O-thexyldimethylsilylcellulose were acylated with diphenylketene in the presence of different bases under mild conditions. The resulting novel, doubly functionalized cellulose derivatives exhibit a total degree of substitution of 2, irrespective of the excess of ketene used in the reaction. The degree of acylation proved to be base-dependent. The use of bulky pyridine bases resulted in a lower acylation than the use of pyridine itself.
