The nature of surface of BaTiO3-x crystals and vacuum deposits has been studied by means of layer-by-layer Auger analysis. Surface layers of adsorbed CO molecules as well as layers with abnormal Ba/Ti, O/Ti ratios and thickness within the range of some tens of angstroms have been found in both crystals and films. The interjacent layers of Ti + TiOx (in the thickness range of tens-hundreds angstroms) appear in films deposited on Pt-, Ni- or Al2O3 substrates. These layers together with the previous ones can substantially influence the dielectric parameters and the specific behaviour of such ferroelectrics.
