The genus Exophiala was proposed by Carmichael (1) to accommodate the fungus causing cerebral mycetoma in cut-throat trout (Salmo clarkii Richardson) and lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush Walbaum). In 1969, Fijan (3) described a systemic mycosis in channel catfish (Ictalurus punctuatus Rafinesque) and identified the fungus as E. salmonis Carmichael. Upon reevaluation, this fungus is described here as a new species.
