The Woodlands, Texas Anthony R. Benedetto, Ph.D., FACHE, earned his baccalaureate through doctoral degrees in nuclear engineering from Texas A&M University. After serving in the US Army as a health physicist, he became a nuclear medicine physicist and acquired an MBA degree. After leaving active duty, he broadened his horizon into general diagnostic radiology physics and rose to tenured professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. During this time, he gained administrative leadership experience and came to believe that the modern radiology department should be led at the vice-chairman level by a medical physicist. The University of Kentucky gave him the opportunity to test this belief. Dr. Benedetto served successfully as director of Operations of Diagnostic Radiology for four years. After moving to the Houston area, he became the Special Project Manager of the Film Library Performance Improvement Project at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Benedetto is currently working toward becoming a registered patent agent and becoming a lawyer practicing intellectual property law and/or healthcare law. This thesis represents a part of Dr. Benedetto's ACHE Fellow project. It was voted the best thesis in 2001. To view the entire thesis, visit ache.org/mbership/advtofellow/caserpts/01casrpt.cfm. A version of this thesis also appeared in the September/October issue of Radiology Management.
