Data map – method for the specification of data flows within production

Digitization of production offers potentials e.g. in reducing throughput-times and increasing productivity. MES and ERP systems can be the central hub for organizing, analyzing and processing enterprise and manufacturing data. Introducing these systems requires clear requirement-definition, since 60% of errors occur here. Even for existing production systems, the successful leverage of data potentials requires a systematic overview of data sources, processing units and sinks. We propose a Data Map to address these problems. It visualizes data flow between data sources and software systems, considering their properties and process context. We demonstrate the application in a project to identify requirements for selecting an ERP System.
