Fluoride concentration in whole saliva and parotid saliva were determined after treatment of teeth with a sodium fluoride varnish (Duraphat®), and a silane fluoride varnish (Fluor Protector®). Fluoride concentration in whole saliva was significantly higher after Duraphat than after Fluor Protector during the first 6 h, but fluoride was eliminated in 27 h after both varnishes. At 30 min, the mean peak values for fluoride in parotid saliva, which are known to run parallel with and somewhat below those in plasma, were 0.114 μg/ml after Duraphat and 0.092 μg/ml after Fluor Protector.
