An algorithm which allows the combined 3-D inversion of magnetic total field and gravimetric data is presented. Model parameters which include top and base of vertical rectangular prisms, susceptibility, remanent magnetization with its inclination and declination and density can be given as a priori information. The joint inversion serves to reduce the inherent ambiguity, mainly of gravimetric models, in cases when it can be assumed that a magnetic and a gravimetric anomaly are caused by the same source rock and, in general, allows a fast modelling of potential field data. Different synthetic examples are provided to show some of the possibilities that this algorithm offers. Finally, a couple of anomalies measured in southwestern Germany are modelled using this algorithm.
