A novel technique for the absolute calibration of ionization chambers measuring the intensity of extracted carbon ion beams in the 400–450 MeV/nucleon energy range using activation detectors has been proposed at the Institute for High Energy Physics of the National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute”. A radiometric facility operating on the gamma-gamma coincidence principle, an activation detector made of pure carbon with a natural isotope mixture, and the 12C(12C, X)11C reaction are used. This study examines the prerequisites for developing this technique, provides a general description, and describes the process of a plane-parallel ionization chamber calibration during its regular operation at the experimental Radiobiological Stand of the U-70 Accelerator Complex at the IHEP, NRC “Kurchatov Institute”.
