The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) tools into work processes drives growing demand for AI-related skills. Researchers and policy makers need a reliable measure of regional AI-skill demand to understand and react to these changes. We discuss the advantages and disadvantages of indicators including absolute numbers, shares, and location and normalised location quotients. We compare regional indicators using 34 million online job advertisements from 2021 to 2024 allocated to German spatial planning regions (Raumordnungsregionen, ROR). We find that the normalised location quotient is the most reliable measure, capturing the nuances of AI-skill demand even in less densely populated regions.
