Collections of Huguenot manuscript sermons are rare, but they provide unique insights into ministerial teaching and practices. The large collection of manuscript sermons and notes made by Claude Scoffier between 1702 and 1729 reveal his approach to preaching and ministry centred on structured models and frequent reuse of sermons during his ministry in London and Middelburg. His usually low-key sermons sometimes marked significant national events, and his notes record his preaching amid internal church disputes. Evidence of how catechetical teaching was delivered is scarce, making Scoffier’s notes particularly valuable. They demonstrate the ways in which he adapted his ministerial practice to the requirements and expectations of the countries in which he preached, and assist the revision of our understanding of Huguenot ministry in this period of the exile.
