The water hyacinth is a floating aquatic macrophyte plant found in several environments such as lakes and reservoirs of hydroelectric power plants. The high development of these plants can form dense carpets resulting in reduction of oxygen in the water and aquatic flora and fauna. The high growth of water hyacinth and its lignocellulosic chemical composition are factors that contribute to the use of water hyacinth as a promising source for the production of second generation ethanol. The present study aims to perform a review about different technologies for the production of bioethanol from the water.
