A puckered four-membered LuP2Li ring is the core of the title compound 1, which was obtained by reaction of the corresponding di-μ-methyl complexes with HPPh2, via stepwise substitution of the methyl ligands. The X-ray structure analysis of 1 has allowed elucidation of the bonding relationships in organolanthanoid-phosphane compounds, which are of interest as mild agents for R2P transfer.
