An interpretation is proposed of a strong correlation between the optical-mode excitation energy and hydrogen-metal distance in a series of fluorite-type metal hydrides. Discussion is based on central pair potentials between hydrogen and metal atoms, and is shown to give consistent results on hydrogen on T sites in BCC metals as well.
