Wild blueberry diet improves aortic biomechanical function, boosting vascular PGI2 levels ~34% in obese rats.
Why the study?
The effect of wild blueberry consumption on the biomechanical properties of the aorta in the obese Zucker rat model of metabolic syndrome was evaluated.

Does not support human dietary recommendations; hypothesis-generating for wild blueberry effects on vascular pathways in metabolic syndrome models.
Does a wild blueberry-enriched diet improve aortic vascular function in obese Zucker rats?
Wild blueberry consumption may improve aortic vascular function in a rat model of metabolic syndrome by modulating nitric oxide and cyclooxygenase pathways.
Vendrame et al. (2013) studied Metabolic syndrome (obese Zucker rat model) (n=72). Wild blueberry-enriched diet vs. Control diet was evaluated on Biomechanical properties of the aorta (Phe-mediated vasoconstriction and Ach-mediated vasorelaxation). Wild blueberry consumption partially restored aortic biomechanical properties in obese Zucker rats, significantly increasing PGI2 concentration (766.5 vs 571.7 pg/mg aorta, p≤0.05).
