Two different techniques are applied to polymerizations in gas-phase reactors. Either the overall activity of the catalyst is measured in a stirred bed reactor, or investigations on the scale of single catalyst particles are carried out. In this study, the gas-phase polymerization of butadiene has been examined. Videomicroscopy is an effective method for the examination of gas-phase polymerizations using heterogeneous catalysts. The combination of the videomicroscope with a mini-reactor allows a comparison of the results between two independent measuring methods.
