The dehydration of 1,4- butanediol to tetrahydrofuran is a reaction that possesses disadvantages under conventional conditions caused by the use of mineral-acids and the corrosion problem interconnected with it. These disadvantages can be remedied by the use of pure supercritical water as reaction medium, as well as catalyst. The ionic mechanism, which exists under conventional conditions, could be validated by the examinations of this present work not only in the sub- but also in the supercritical range.
