The European Commission’s High Level Group on Hydrogen & Fuel Cells has just unveiled its Summary Report, in which it outlines its vision for a future with widespread use of hydrogen energy and fuel cells — although there is continuing debate over the use of advanced nuclear energy (such as fusion) rather than just renewables to produce ‘clean’ hydrogen in the medium to long term. Its recommendations are summarized here, and a possible timetable is outlined for introduction across Europe in response to the challenges of climate change, pollution and energy security posed by our existing reliance on fossil fuels.
