Desulfurization of molten pig iron at 1583K has been carried out by injecting premelted powdered flux containing 40 wt.% lime, 40 wt.% calcium fluoride, and 20 wt.% alumina. Argon was used as a carrier gas. Powdered aluminium was added to the metal bath before, during, and after powder injection to study the most effective method of aluminium‐desulfurization of molten pig iron. Thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of desulfurization in the presence of aluminium have been discussed. A kinetic model was developed to study the extent of transitory and permanent contact reactions. Mass transfer coefficient during transitory contact reaction has been evaluated.
