In 10 female patients with thyrotoxicosis, parathyroid hormone given in a dose of 500 USP units produced an elevation of serum calcium which was significantly greater than that observed in euthyroid individuals, and in 5 patients hypercalcemia resulted. These findings suggest that in thyrotoxicosis there is a compensatory decrease in parathyroid gland function. Failure of this response may be responsible for the hypercalcemia which is occasionally seen in this disease.
