A quantitative use-wear analysis was carried out on 124 Mimbres Black-on-white bowls in the collections of the Arizona State Museum. In the course of the study several distinct types of wear patterns associated with bowls were discovered. Hypotheses about the functional role of Mimbres bowls were formulated and tested. It is argued that these vessels had functions that were not exclusively utilitarian and that some of the vessels probably functioned as status items.
