In the course of a study of the influence of some Friedel‐Crafts halides on isobutylene polymerization catalyzed by aluminum bromide it was found that the most active catalytic complex is formed in the reaction of titanium chloride with aluminum bromide. The conversion and the molecular weight of the polymer depend on the aluminum bromide concentration but are practically independent of the TiCl4 concentration. The polymerization mechanism has been solved by means of the nonstationary‐state theory, by means of which values have been obtained for the rate constants of the individual partial elementary reactions (growth, monomer transfer, spontaneous transfer, and termination).
