A glutamic acid producing microorganism (Corynebacterium glutamicum) is entrapped in a polyacrylamide gel. These immobilized microorganisms were used to produce glutamic acid in successive batches of fresh medium. Free microorganisms similarly used produced much less glutamic acid under similar conditions.
