The structure of spheroidal graphite in a magnesium treated ductile cast iron was studied by a combined use of high performance microscopic instruments: SEM with EDS, EPMA, AES and TEM. A spherical sulphide (Mg,Ca)S of about 1μm diameter was found near the centre of graphite spheroids and thought to be a nucleus for the graphite. A spherical MgO of about 0.2μm diameter was found in the sulphide and considered to be a nucleus for the sulphide.
