Key result
Pericardiectomy for canine constrictive pericarditis yields mixed outcomes, including fatal intrathoracic hemorrhage.
Why the study?
Constrictive pericarditis in dogs is a rare condition with limited clinical descriptions and treatment outcomes.
Population
2 German Shepherd Dogs with constrictive pericarditis
Comparison
Pericardiectomy and epicardial decortication vs left hemipericardiectomy and partial epicardiectomy with pellet removal

Alerts clinicians to postsurgical constrictive pericarditis in dogs; leaves open optimal diagnostic and therapeutic strategies pending larger studies.
Case Report (n=2)
Surgical intervention for constrictive pericarditis in dogs can have variable outcomes, ranging from complete recovery to fatal hemorrhage.
Schwartz et al. (1971) conducted a case report in Constrictive pericarditis (n=2). Pericardiectomy and epicardial decortication was evaluated on Clinical outcome. Surgical treatment of constrictive pericarditis in two dogs resulted in death from intrathoracic hemorrhage in one dog and complete recovery in the other.
