The composite protective coatings incorporating layered double hydroxides (LDH) with smart nanocontainer function loaded with sodium oleate were formed on plasma electrolytically oxidized (PEO) Mg alloy surface. The SEM, XPS, XRD, and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the presence of Mg-Al LDH on PEO-pretreated surface as well as the sodium oleate inclusion in the formed matrix. Synchrotron micro-X-ray diffraction mapping showed the hydrotalcite distribution on the coating surface. The anticorrosion performance of the formed protective layers was analyzed by electrochemical tests (including EIS, PDP, SVET/SIET). The degradation rate of the samples measured by H 2 evolution and mass loss measurements was decreased by 67 folds as compared to bare alloy (from 0.94 to 0.014 mm/year). The kinetics of oleate release from the coating was studied with UV-VIS spectroscopy. The mechanism of the protective coating operation was proposed. Analysis the obtained results indicates that formed protective LDH-containing coatings impregnated with sodium oleate showed a high level of protective properties and also exhibited a self-healing effect.
