Cr 2 N precipitation and its impact on mechanical properties were investigated in S32750 super duplex stainless steel aged at 650–750 °C. Lamellar Cr 2 N rapidly precipitated along ferrite/ferrite grain boundaries after only 5 min at 650 °C and progressively decorated the boundaries during aging. Despite its low volume fraction, grain-boundary Cr 2 N caused severe impact embrittlement with little effect on tensile strength. Notably, only ∼1.4 vol% Cr 2 N reduced the impact energy from 260 to 97 J after aging at 650 °C for 60 min. Fractographic analysis revealed preferential crack propagation along ferrite/Cr 2 N interfaces, promoting intergranular fracture. These results demonstrate that grain-boundary connectivity and lamellar morphology, rather than Cr 2 N volume fraction alone, dominate the impact embrittlement of S32750.
