This work explores surface structure of crochet formwork, expressed as spheres, hexagonal tessellations and hyperbolic planes. Its material properties also result in fractional dimensions, while exploring the space between solid and void. This study is through the medium of yarn and paint and the application of crochet techniques. “This allows the designer to pay attention to the specificity of each particle/component individually, yet produce a complex overall structure.” [1]. Crochet is a technique, as well as a technology, that generates material algorithmic bodies. By attending to each continuous iterative stitch, crochet becomes an expression of emergence through material algorithmic processing. The body-material responsive process of crochet comprises three movements: (1) holding the yarn around the finger, (2) inserting the hook through a loop, and (3) hooking the yarn through a loop. Movement and material are experienced through rhythms, tensions, and textures. This procedural experience becomes algorithmic bodies expressed as surface structures.
