The present study is concerned with the notion of Western gaze in the context of German transnationals based in Turkey, a non-Western setting that did not go through a colonial intervention but has been through an actual Western-style modernization. Reporting on a life history study, the paper analyzes how the participants construct and refract the Western gaze posed on the Turks in the framework of Turkish modernity as an analytical heuristic. Analyses of participant narratives suggest that the construction of the gaze is a multilingual process that concerns the German-Turkish transnational space. Against the background of their migratory trajectories and their relocations in Turkey, the participants pose a refracted gaze on the Turkish Other as a modern subject.
