Acute aortic regurgitation drives early hypercontractility followed by progressive LV dilation and hypertrophy over 4 weeks.
Why the study?
Compensatory mechanisms of the left ventricle and associated aortic physiological changes following acute aortic regurgitation were not fully understood.
Acute aortic regurgitation induces a two-stage compensatory process involving immediate changes in aortic distensibility and delayed left ventricular hypertrophy and dilatation over 4 weeks.

Rabbit model of acute AR suggests staged LV adaptation; hypothesis-generating and should not yet influence human care.

Yumiko Wainai (1991) studied Acute aortic regurgitation (n=42). Aortic valve perforation vs. Baseline (before perforation) was evaluated on Haemodynamic measurements, characteristic impedance, and distensibility of the aorta. Acute aortic regurgitation in rabbits induced a two-stage compensatory process over 4 weeks, with early increased systolic shortening and later left ventricular dilatation and hypertrophy.
