Formal protected area management often requires fences and roads, and these can have negative impacts on animals. During many visits to Ndumo Game Reserve, in northwestern KwaZulu‐Natal, South Africa, the authors noticed substantial numbers of several species of reptiles and birds using the older fence posts along the southern boundary road for various purposes, including shelter, nesting, and possibly as vantage points for feeding. We postulate that, far from being detrimental to all species, these older poles can provide important ‘services’ to some animals.
