This qualitative study aimed to describe youths experiences of participation in equine‑facilitated therapy (EFT) to promote psychological functioning in Finland. The objective was to provide social and healthcare professionals and clients with new insights into EFT as a potential form of rehabilitation while also developing EFT based on youths’ experiences. Data were collected through semi-structured thematic interviews with youths (n = 15) with an average age of 17. As a result, three main categories were identified: 1) therapeutic elements of promoting the psychological functioning of youth, 2) the effect of EFT in promoting the psychological functioning of youth and 3) factors challenging youths’ motivation and commitment to EFT. Youths experienced EFT as a motivating and versatile form of rehabilitation in which they were committed and actively participated. According to the youths, their mental resources increased and their ability to perform everyday activities and function in social environments improved. In conclusion, the horse, with its living environment, surrounding nature and professional therapists, enables a form of rehabilitation that promotes motivation, commitment and psychological functioning for youth. The results can be utilised to promote the mental health of youth and develop EFT internationally within the rehabilitation framework.
