JSH2019 guideline implementation yields unclear effects on office BP and antihypertensive prescribing.
Why the study?
The impact of the 2019 revision of the Japanese Hypertension Guideline on blood pressure control and antihypertensive drug use in routine clinical practice was limited and unclear.
Does the publication of the Japanese Hypertension Guideline 2019 (JSH2019) improve blood pressure control and antihypertensive drug use in patients with hypertension?

Guideline revisions may influence routine BP management in Japan; leaves open whether stricter targets improve outcomes.
Hypertension management aims to prevent cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The Japanese Society of Hypertension (JSH) guidelines were revised from JSH2014 to JSH2019 to apply stricter blood pressure (BP) targets for essential hypertension, while targets for patients with metabolic comorbidities remained largely unchanged. However, evidence regarding the impact of these revisions on routine clinical practice is limited. This study investigated changes in office BP and antihypertensive prescriptions before and after the publication of JSH2019.
