Yields of fission fragments [Formula: see text]I and [Formula: see text]Xe populated by proton induced fission of [Formula: see text]U have been measured using stacked foil activation technique. In the yield of [Formula: see text]I and [Formula: see text]Xe, in addition to the direct formation, there are contributions from the decay of the precursors viz., [Formula: see text]I, [Formula: see text]Te and [Formula: see text]Sb, with a time dependent behaviour. These decay contributions are accounted while calculating the yield. [Formula: see text]Xe, having large neutron capture cross-section, acts as a strong reactor poison and affect the criticality of the reactor. The results obtained are analysed with the theoretical model calculations using TALYS 1.96.
