Key result
High maze-task efficiency is linked to autonomic rather than central heart rhythm regulation.
Why the study?
The study investigated changes in statistical characteristics of heart rhythm during performance of maze-model tasks to understand heart rhythm variability under cognitive load.
Observational
Heart rhythm regulation shifts between autonomous and central contours depending on the efficiency of performing cognitive maze tasks.
The changes of statistical characteristics of heart rhythm during carrying out of maze-model tasks on the computer are investigated. Two groups of probationers were allotted by their reaction to the loading: the first group is characterized by the decreasing of strain index (SI); the second group – by the increasing of SI. It is shown, that at the most of probationers, carrying out the tasks with high efficiency, the heart rhythm regulation is realized by the level of autonomous contour, while at the most of probationers carrying out the tasks with low efficiency – by the level of central contour.

Grigoryan et al. (2003) reported an observational. Maze-model tasks on a computer was evaluated on Changes of statistical characteristics of heart rhythm (strain index). Carrying out maze-model tasks with high efficiency was associated with heart rhythm regulation by the autonomous contour, whereas low efficiency was associated with central contour regulation.
