In the field of energetic materials, N–N bridged bis-heterocyclic energetic compounds represent a unique structural class, wherein the two heterocyclic rings are connected via a direct covalent bond between their nitrogen atoms. Owing to the relatively low bond dissociation energy of the N–N linkage and the frequent competing side reactions during direct N–N coupling, synthetic reports on such compounds remain scarce. Property analysis of existing compounds reveals that they exhibit a high heat of formation, satisfactory energetic performance, relatively good thermal stability, and low sensitivity, positioning them as promising yet underexplored candidates for advanced energetic materials. To facilitate the design and synthesis of such compounds, this review systematically summarizes established synthetic methodologies and plausible mechanisms for constructing N–N bridged bis-heterocyclic frameworks. The summarized strategies provide critical guidance for formulating design strategies and rational synthesis, thereby inspiring further exploration in this emerging field.
