Although much is known about the challenges clinicians and parents face during a neurodevelopmental assessment, to date, there has been little focus on examining these differing experiences. The aim of this study was to explore the views of clinical staff and parents during an autism spectrum disorder assessment, using a mixed-method approach which involved both parents and staff completing a survey with closed and open-ended questions and/or parent one-on-one qualitative interviews or a focus group. The study highlighted the challenges faced by both clinical staff and parents during the assessment process. Despite the emotional challenges, parents felt supported; however, staff were self-critical about aspects of the process. It became clear that there is a need for a strong alliance between staff and parents throughout the process, which requires a holistic, adaptive, and collaborative approach. Staff challenges can be managed through a supportive multidisciplinary team, while provision of clear expectations prior to the assessment may alleviate parental stress.
