Elatine ojibwayensis (Elatinaceae) is an enigmatic species known only from two locations in northern Quebec. Microscopic examination of the holotype and sole paratype of Elatine ojibwayensis from Quebec has revealed that these two vouchers are indistinguishable from verified vouchers of Elatine orthosperma from Europe. The amended and corrected species diagnosis of Elatine ojibwayensis is equivalent to the species description of Elatine orthosperma. The Quebec specimens and the European specimens are virtually identical in gross morphology and SEM images of the seeds reveal no significant difference in seed size or ornamentation. Elatine objibwayensis Garneau (2006) is determined here as a heterotypic synonym for Elatine orthosperma Düben (1839). A further review of Elatine specimens collected in British Columbia has revealed that Elatine orthosperma occurs also as a native species in southern British Columbia. E. orthosperma is thus a circumboreal species occurring on all three northern continents.
