Key result
Schistosomiasis was diagnosed in 69% of 226 patients from an endemic area, but no evidence of schistosome cardiomyopathy or endomyocardial fibrosis was detected in any patient.
Why the study?
An association of schistosomiasis with endomyocardial fibrosis or cardiomyopathy has been suggested but not confirmed in endemic areas.
Cross-Sectional (n=226)
Schistosomiasis may not cause cardiomyopathy in this endemic cohort; leaves open its prevalence and requires prospective studies.
An association of schistosomiasis and endomyocardial fibrosis or cardiomyopathy has been suggested. Clinical, stool, abdominal ultrasound, electrocardiogram, and Doppler echocardiogram examinations were performed on 226 patients from an area endemic for schistosomiasis. The diagnosis of schistosomiasis was made in 152 patients (69%) but clinical, electrocardiographic, or Doppler echocardiographic evidence of a schistosome cardiomyopathy or endomyocardial fibrosis could not be detected in any patient.

Barbosa et al. (1998) conducted a cross-sectional in Schistosomiasis (n=226). Schistosomiasis vs. Patients without schistosomiasis was evaluated on Clinical, electrocardiographic, or Doppler echocardiographic evidence of a schistosome cardiomyopathy or endomyocardial fibrosis. Schistosomiasis was diagnosed in 69% of 226 patients from an endemic area, but no evidence of schistosome cardiomyopathy or endomyocardial fibrosis was detected in any patient.
