Elite weightlifting linked to ~27% higher absolute LVM, but no difference when scaled to fat-free mass.
Why the study?
The impact of different scalar variables and scaling processes on athlete-control comparisons of cardiac dimensions was unclear.
Cross-Sectional (n=56)
Absolute Event Rate: 262% vs 206%
p-value: p=< 0.05

Different scaling methods may change LV size comparisons in athletes; leaves open optimal normalization for research and clinical use.
George et al. (1998) conducted a cross-sectional in Healthy athletes and controls (n=56). Elite weight lifting (athlete status) vs. Age-matched controls was evaluated on Absolute left ventricular mass (LVM) (p=< 0.05). Elite male weight lifters had greater absolute left ventricular mass than controls (262 vs 206, P<0.05), but no difference remained when scaled to fat-free mass (P>0.05).
