Key result
Exercise training is linked to ~17% higher VO2max in male heart transplant recipients.
Why the study?
Appropriate methods to effectively guide exercise intensity in orthotopic heart transplant patients are uncertain due to altered physiologic responses of the denervated heart.
Observational (n=19)

May support RPE-guided intensity in OHT exercise; leaves open optimal method and outcome impact in larger trials.
Keteyian et al. (1990) conducted an observational in Orthotopic heart transplant (n=19). Exercise training was evaluated on Changes in VO2max and peak heart rate, and accuracy of HR-based methods for determining exercise intensity. Exercise training in male heart transplant patients increased mean VO2max by 17.2%, and the maximal HR-reserve method was more accurate than straight percent of peak HR for guiding intensity.
