Several bromoform and iodoform formation potential tests were evaluated for use as surrogates for trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP). Although these tests are generally faster and simpler than the THMFP test, some were very difficult to perform, and others gave inaccurate results. Based on analyses of raw and treated drinking waters, the 2‐h standard iodoform formation potential test appeared to be the most useful. This test proved to be a better surrogate for THMFP than dissolved organic carbon, and it was equally as accurate as UV absorbance.
