3D mapping with drug-eluting balloons enables successful recanalization of total pulmonary vein occlusion.
Why the study?
Pulmonary vein stenosis is a known complication of PV isolation procedures for atrial fibrillation, and treatment of total pulmonary vein occlusion remains challenging.
Case Report (n=1)
May offer a treatment option for pulmonary vein occlusion; hypothesis-generating and requires prospective validation before practice change.
Pulmonary vein stenosis (PVS) is a known complication of PV isolation procedures for atrial fibrillation. In this report a case of recurring PV occlusion after repeated percutaneous procedures has been described. Focus is on a novel interventional technique employing a three-dimensional mapping system which enables targeting total occlusion of PVs and on the use of a drug eluting balloon. A focused review of the current literature regarding ongoing limitations of PV stenosis treatment has been provided.

Hilbert et al. (2015) conducted a case report in Total pulmonary vein occlusion (n=1). 3D-mapping system and image integration with drug-eluting balloon was evaluated. A novel interventional technique employing a three-dimensional mapping system and a drug-eluting balloon enabled the targeting and treatment of total pulmonary vein occlusion.
