Key result
Depressive symptoms affect ~22% of STEMI patients within 24 hours of primary PCI.
Why the study?
Patterns and specific sources of anxiety over time in men after a first acute myocardial infarction were not well characterized.
Population
76 men under 66 years with first acute myocardial infarction
Design
Observational study with repeated anxiety measurements

Depression symptoms fluctuate after STEMI PCI; supports serial monitoring in cohorts but leaves optimal intervention timing open for trials.
Observational (n=79)
No
Thompson et al. (1987) conducted an observational in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) (n=79). STEMI treated by primary PCI was evaluated on Prevalence of depression symptoms (BDI-II ≥ 14) within 24 hours after primary PCI. In patients with STEMI treated by primary PCI, the prevalence of depression symptoms was 21.5% within 24 hours, dropped to 9.2% before discharge, and gradually increased to 13.8% at one year.
