Key result
Doberman breed linked to increased myocardial pro-MMP-9 and neutrophil elastase activity vs controls.
Why the study?
Canine dilated cardiomyopathy results in extracellular matrix remodelling within the myocardium, but the proteolytic activity involved is not well characterized.
Population
Doberman pinschers with dilated cardiomyopathy, clinically normal Dobermans, and control non-Doberman dogs
Comparison
Dobermans with dilated cardiomyopathy and clinically normal Dobermans vs control dogs
Design
Observational study using substrate gel zymography of post mortem myocardial samples

Increased MMP-9 and neutrophil elastase in Doberman myocardium may contribute to ECM remodeling; hypothesis-generating for protease roles in DCM predisposition and progression.
Observational
Sophie J. Gilbert (1997) conducted an observational in Canine dilated cardiomyopathy. Doberman breed (with or without dilated cardiomyopathy) vs. Control dogs (non-Dobermans) was evaluated on Promatrix metalloproteinase-9 and neutrophil elastase activity in myocardium. Promatrix metalloproteinase-9 and neutrophil elastase activities were significantly increased in the myocardium of all Dobermans compared to non-Doberman controls.
