Key result
Percutaneous balloon mitral dilatation is linked to a ~100% increase in mean valve area.
Why the study?
The outcome of percutaneous balloon dilatation of the mitral valve in critically ill young patients with intractable heart failure was not well characterized.
Observational (n=12)

May support percutaneous mitral balloon dilatation in select young patients with intractable heart failure; hypothesis-generating, needs prospective validation.
Patel et al. (1995) conducted an observational in Intractable heart failure and mitral stenosis (n=12). Percutaneous balloon dilatation of the mitral valve was evaluated on Echocardiographic value of the mitral valve area and clinical improvement. Percutaneous balloon dilatation of the mitral valve was successful in all 12 patients, increasing mean mitral valve area from 0.7 to 1.4 cm2 and reducing pulmonary artery systolic pressure.
