Travellers planning a trip from the United States to Australia face one of the longest and most expensive itineraries on offer, yet fares, charges and traffic are usually reported separately. We combine a commercial fare-search snapshot of 27 September 2026 with US Department of Transportation (DOT) International Report data on nonstop passengers and flights, airline schedules and the statutory tax and fee schedules of both countries. Round trips averaged USD 990 over the past month; the monthly median ranged from USD 618 in February to USD 840 in December, 1.36 times as much. Of 17 destinations measured the same way, only Israel (USD 1,232) and New Zealand (USD 1,168) were dearer. Government charges came to USD 125.12 per round trip in September 2026, 12.6% of the average fare, rising to USD 132.62 when Australia's Passenger Movement Charge increases from AUSD 70 to AUSD 80 on 1 January 2027. Scheduled nonstop block times across 11 routes averaged 15 h 25 min, from 10 h 40 min (Honolulu–Sydney) to 17 h 40 min (Dallas/Fort Worth–Melbourne). Nonstop traffic grew from 902,817 passengers in 1990 to 3,322,409 in 2019, collapsed to 100,778 in 2021 and reached 2,339,171 in 2025, 70.4% of the 2019 peak, while scheduled passenger flights recovered to 85.0%, so passengers per flight fell from 264 to 219. The recovery is concentrated in the southern summer and at San Francisco (114.2% of 2019) and Dallas/Fort Worth (128.9%), while Los Angeles, still half of all traffic, stood at 60.2%. Sydney handled 62.4% of passengers.
