Key result
Diffusion tensor imaging feasibility confirmed for resolving helical arterial fiber architecture in porcine aorta.
Why the study?
Noninvasive diagnostic tools to assess the structural properties and changes in arterial tissue are currently being developed, and the feasibility of diffusion tensor imaging for this purpose was investigated.
Population
Fresh porcine aorta tissue

DTI feasible for arterial fibre mapping in porcine models; extends preclinical imaging research but leaves human translation open.
Flamini et al. (2010) studied Arterial fibre structure (n=1). Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) was evaluated on Fibre angle orientation. Diffusion tensor imaging and fibre tractography of a porcine aorta successfully identified two dominant helical fibre angles of 15±2.5° and 175±2.5°, demonstrating the feasibility of DTI for assessing arterial structure.
