Key result
Pyk2 promotes ANF secretion and limits cell spreading, whereas FAK suppresses ANF in neonatal myocytes.
Why the study?
Phenylephrine and endothelin both stimulate cardiac PI hydrolysis and ANF expression, but their long-term effects and patterns of stimulation are not well characterized.

No immediate clinical implications from neonatal myocyte data; leaves open translation of Pyk2/FAK effects to human hypertrophy.
McDonough et al. (1993) studied Cardiac hypertrophy. Phenylephrine and adenoviral expression of Pyk2 or FAK vs. Unstimulated cells or cells expressing control β-galactosidase was evaluated on ANF secretion and cell spreading. In phenylephrine-stimulated neonatal rat ventricular myocytes, Pyk2 expression increased ANF secretion and reduced cell spreading, whereas FAK expression attenuated ANF secretion without altering cell spreading.
