Key result
Thoracic aortic aneurysm rupture into the right ventricle is rare despite ~45% overall rupture rates.
Why the study?
Aneurysms of the thoracic aorta are common, but rupture into the right ventricle is an infrequent and poorly characterized event.
Case Report
Raises awareness of rare right ventricular rupture site; single case leaves open population incidence and management data.

Boyd1states that "0.1 to 0.5 per cent of deaths in American cities are due to aneurysms in the thorax." Lemann2noted aneurysms of the thoracic aorta in 0.3 per cent of all patients examined in a series of 2,000 autopsies. A similar incidence in postmortem studies was noted by Geraci3and by Ogden.4In these aneurysms, rupture occurred in from 39 per cent5to 52 per cent1of the cases reported. Harris et al. (1944) conducted a case report in Aneurysm of the aorta rupturing into the right ventricle. Aneurysm of the aorta rupturing into the right ventricle was evaluated. Rupture of a thoracic aortic aneurysm into the right ventricle is an infrequent occurrence, although general rupture occurs in 39% to 52% of thoracic aortic aneurysm cases.
