FXN loss is linked to impaired calcium handling, mitochondrial dysregulation, and systolic impairment.
Why the study?
The mechanisms underlying cardiac dysfunction in Friedreich's ataxia, including the role of calcium handling abnormalities, were not fully understood.
Translational study demonstrates calcium handling remodeling and mitochondrial dysregulation in Friedreich ataxia hearts, highlighting novel molecular therapeutic targets.

Abou-Assali et al. (2026) studied Friedreich's ataxia. Friedreich's ataxia (FXN knock-out/reduced frataxin expression) vs. Unaffected donors / wild-type mice was evaluated on Cardiac function and calcium-handling protein expression. Friedreich's ataxia and FXN knock-out were associated with impaired calcium handling, mitochondrial dysregulation, and systolic impairment in human and murine hearts.
